Measure Your Sun Exposure
During a sunny day, check your space and record whether it’s in sun or shade at 8 AM, 10 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM, 4 PM, & 6 PM. If your space has varying conditions (due to a tree, fence, or building shading one spot), then take note of each area. This is the most important step in picking a plant palette that can survive, so don’t skimp! Setting an alarm or 2-hour timer can help you stay on track.
6+ hours of direct sunlight per day
4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day
Less than 4 hours of direct sunlight per day
Measure Your Space
Sketch a quick birds-eye-view of your space, which might be as simple as a rectangle. Then whip out a tape measure and record the length of each segment of the perimeter. Measure within the lower 18″ of your space, and take note of things like doors, landings, low windows, and projections that could interfere with placing a planter. While you’re in your space, think about where you might place existing or new furniture, like tables and chairs, relative to your new garden.
Choose Your Planters
Select from three planter shapes (rectangle, square, cylinder), three sizes (small, medium, large), and three colors (charcoal, ivory, rust) for a total of 27 gorgeous options! Double check the size of each planter with your own measurements, and consider leaving a little wiggle room just in case your measurements are slightly off. One planter may fit your space perfectly, or several end-to-end.
